Columnist should promote business

I just finished reading Monday’s column by Angela Mombourquette in which she belittles the idea that people might want to ride around Point Pleasant Park on a Segway, and that other people might make a dollar or two off that concept.

Ms. Mombourquette seems dismayed that people might choose to enjoy nature without putting in a certain required amount of exertion or exercise. Apparently, entrance to the park should be restricted only to those willing to break a sweat.

Now, I’m not going to argue the point that Nova Scotians need more exercise.

The point is that Nova Scotians (or at least the Nova Scotians who tend to be columnists) tend to have a knee-jerk response to any business-related ideas, and upon hearing the idea of anything entrepreneurial will tend to automatically assume the position where “anything that generates money towards a capitalist business is to be ridiculed and hoped to fail.”

And that point of view is precisely the reason why Nova Scotia continues to be a place where good business ideas go to die. There is little support from the media or the community in general, and a lot of the time even the most benign ideas generate an inordinate amount of hostility.

I imagine this concept would actually be a fantastic way to tour Point Pleasant Park.

And while the health benefits of such a tour might be negligible, they are no worse than most of the other traditional Nova Scotia tourist traps, such as: driving to Peggys Cove, driving the Cabot trail, riding the Harbour Hopper or stuffing yourself with food and booze while listening to music on the waterfront.

The problem is that people like Ms. Mombourquette are actually less interested in the health aspects of ideas like Segway Nova Scotia but instead are more instinctively turned off by the thought that somebody would dare to try and turn that idea into a profit-making business. And so they shoot down the idea.

Maybe she can formulate ideas in a way that encourages entrepreneurs to give the idea a good honest try, even while predicting it not to work.

Then Ms. Mombourquette can have a great time making fun of them after they hopefully fail.

Mombourquette’s right in Segway debate

Angela Mombourquette has done it again. Reflected my views on the stupid Segways exactly. Thanks.

My 10-year old grandson tried one out at the Oval. He is an athletic kid who loves biking, surfing, judo, etc. He fell off and hurt himself. So much for the mobility-challenged.

Thanks to man who returned son’s wallet

On Friday July 13, my son went swimming in Fall River with some friends to enjoy the evening cooling off from the heat. Upon returning home, he was sick when he realized that his wallet was lost. He returned to the lake with a flashlight to look for the wallet in the dark and returned again Saturday morning but still no luck. He was concerned with replacing the ID and the cost he would have to incur with the lost wallet.

An honest gentleman found his wallet on the Fall River Road and took the time to deliver the wallet to our door. ensuring the wallet would be safe. This kind gentleman would not take any gas money for delivering the wallet to us.

We would like to thank him for his kindness in restoring our faith that there are thoughtful people in our community who are willing to help someone in trouble without needing any kind of reward but a thanks. To this kind man, please accept our sincere thank you for helping my son with his missing wallet!
