Moving? Planning makes it easier
June is a popular month for moving especially for families with school-aged children. Your REALTOR® understands how stressful this can be, and can be a great resource to help you finalize and plan your move. If, like most people, you are doing your own packing, give yourself lots of time; and plan your move several weeks in advance. This will save you time, money and stress!
More is less. Moving is a great way to help downsize and say goodbye to unnecessary items. Deciding ahead of time what to keep and what to give away (say at this week’s curbside giveaway) will help make the move less cumbersome. This is also a good time to begin to pack non-essential items, such as winter clothes.
Box it up! Friends, coworkers and family members are a great source for moving supplies, especially boxes. For fragile or larger items such as mirrors and framed pictures, you may need to purchase specially sized boxes to accommodate them.
Label it! Labeling boxes with instructions such as ‘2nd floor office’ or ‘fragile - this side up’ will assist movers in getting your things to the correct room and in one piece.
List it! It never hurts to have an inventory of your items that are being moved. It will your movers’ job that much easier by having a list to refer to. It will also save you the frustration of having to rummage through ten boxes marked ‘kids stuff’ to find one pair of shoes for school!
Wrap it up! Carefully wrap fragile items such as glassware, or that valued antique bowl to save you a lot of heartache. Sheets and bedding are great to wrap larger pieces of furniture and less expensive than bubble wrap. Cardboard is also useful for protecting corners of desks and will prevent damage to walls when you are moving in and out.
Tape it up! Tape any stray items together such as cords to computers or speaker wires, and curtain rods for easy transportation. Putting bolts and screws into zip lock bags and taping them to your furniture or securing them in the drawers of a desk is a great way to keep everything together.
With some thoughtful planning, and the advice of your REALTOR®, moving day will be easier and less stressful for the whole family.
