Finding organizing inspiration
Like many of you I’m sure, I love collecting and studying any information I can get my hands on about organizing. The good news is there are some new sources out there that I thought I would share with you in case you’re an organizing junkie like me. My favourite new TV show is The Amandas on E! network. It’s all about an organizing company owned by, you guessed it, Amanda LeBlanc. I’m so jealous; they even have their own store called Clutter Prescription — how cool is that!
Anyway, on the show the entire team of five organizers, plus Amanda and her assistant, descend upon a clients’ home or workplace and transform two spaces during the course of the one-hour show. Amanda reminds me of myself.
She loves organizing and suffers from OCD. Although, I have to say, her OCD is several levels more advanced than mine — can that girl space hangers perfectly on a hanging rod or what?
I can’t imagine any of my clients ever being able to maintain her level of neatness; even I can’t do it. That’s TV for you, sigh.
Some of the gossipping and backstabbing between the girls is quite annoying and not terribly professional, but it does make for good entertainment, which must be why I tune in every week. Actually, I think it has more to do with how they design the spaces they organize and how particular Amanda is about the type of containers and labels they use. Like me, she does love everything to look “just so” at the end of a project.
My next favourite new source for organizing information is Getting Organized Magazine. That is where I learned that there is a Clutter Prescription iPhone app designed by Amanda herself. If you are a follower of their newsletter the Daily Vitamin, you become a Clutter Prescription patient — too much fun.
And, of course, she’s not the only one with an app. Organizing Junkie (yes there is a company by that name) has one that helps you organize your tasks and Peter Walsh (no surprise there) has one too. The magazine also highlights the latest and greatest new organizing products including a paper shredder from Black & Decker that hangs on the wall and features a built-in whiteboard — totally wicked!
And last, but not least, there’s Pinterest, which my fellow Herald Homes writers have been crooning over already. Oh wow, what a fun spot it is. I have totally enjoyed setting up my page (www.pinterest.com/janeveldhoven) and my fave pinboards are Get Mid Century Modern (you know all about my obsession) and Get Organized Great Ideas, with Get Pets running a close third. The only problem with Pinterest is that you could spend the rest of your life researching and looking for ideas and never actually start your organizing project, let alone finish it.
Most likely, for any space you want to organize, you’ll find pictures galore to inspire you. I’ve certainly had great success. So, go check it out.
However, you may want to set an alarm to tell you when to stop — it's totally addictive.
