Four city beaches reopen
Four Halifax-area beaches reopened Saturday after bacteria levels proved safe for swimming.
Birch Cove, Kinsmen, Black Rock and Dingle beaches closed last week due to health concerns about elevated bacteria counts.
Birch Cove Beach closed last week due to high bacteria counts.
Heavy rain resulted in the July 25 closure of Dingle and Black Rock beaches following heavy rains and overflows at nearby wastewater pumping stations. The water was not tested at the time, but city officials closed the beaches as a precaution.
Lifeguards stayed at the beaches to warn swimmers of the risk, but did not enforce the recommendation to stay out of the water.
Bacteria levels at all four beaches are now within Health Canada guidelines for swimming, an HRM spokesperson said Saturday.
