Halifax man gets bail on charges of smuggling brass knuckles
UPDATED 9:02 p.m. Tuesday
A 19-year-old Halifax man accused of smuggling brass knuckles into the country has been freed from custody with the Crown’s consent.
Craig Tucker Redmond was arrested Aug. 1 when Canada Border Services Agency officers raided two homes in the west end of the city and seized about two dozen brass knuckles, which are considered a prohibited weapon.
Redmond faces three charges of violating the Customs Act by smuggling, possessing and exchanging brass knuckles.
He’s also charged with five indictable weapons-related offences under the Criminal Code. Two of those charges carry a mandatory minimum penalty of three years in prison.
Tuesday in Halifax provincial court, Redmond was released on a $1,000 recognizance with conditions that he remain in Nova Scotia, reside at an address on Connolly Street, not possess or consume alcohol or drugs and not have any weapons.
Judge Bill Digby ordered Redmond to have no contact with Conor Lively, who was also charged in the raid, and another young man.
Redmond will return to court Sept. 6.
Border agents were looking for brass knuckles when they executed search warrants at homes on Edinburgh and Connolly streets. Six guns were also seized and turned over to Halifax Regional Police for further investigation.
Charges have yet to be laid in connection with the firearms, which are not believed to have been smuggled.
The border agents also allegedly recovered ammunition and marijuana.
