The Nova Scotia government says it expects that renovations and an addition to St. Mary’s Academy in Sherbrooke should be finished during the 2013-14 school year.

The work will turn the 146-student, Grade 8-12 school into one that has students from Grades Primary to 12. The Strait regional school board will then close the more than 50-year-old St. Mary’s Education Centre next door. The older school has 146 students in grades Primary to 7.

The project involves new classrooms and building an addition, which will include a second gymnasium, multi-purpose area, music room and drama-art rooms.

The school board decided in 2010 to merge the schools. Work began in 2011.

The total cost of the project is $6.3 million.
