Provincial cabinet minister John MacDonell has said his office hasn’t received many complaints about rent increases. But a Halifax councillor says she has.

“This is an issue that has been going on since January, which I brought to the attention of the (provincial) government awhile ago,” Dawn Sloane said Friday.

At first, she said she heard from one or two people.

“Then it became four or five, then six or seven, then 20. And it keeps accumulating, in the number of individuals who are looking at these rate hikes.”

The late John Savage’s former Liberal government dissolved rent control in Nova Scotia in 1993.

MacDonnell, the cabinet minister responsible for the Residential Tenancies Act, said in May that reviewing rent control was not on his list of priorities.

“If I was getting inundated with complaints, I might consider this as a much bigger issue,” he said in the spring. “In my department, we’ve only received two or three complaints in six months.”

A spokeswoman for Premier Darrell Dexter said this week the government has no plans to resurrect rent control.

“It is not something the province is considering,” Jennifer Stewart told The Chronicle Herald.

Sloane, who represents downtown Halifax on regional council and is running in the new Peninsula North district, said many seniors, people on fixed incomes and disabled tenants need help when faced with rent increases.

Coun. Sue Uteck (Northwest Arm-South End) has also urged the NDP government to take a look at the rent control issue.

Who the hell is Jennifer Stewart ?

And why is she picking on the poor ? "Rent control is gone for good", never say never Stewart. For using the poor people ,just to take a shot at the next Savage to be mayor. So why would they take rent control away in the first place ? It wasn't costing the tax payer's much . It probably wasn't used much , if it's on the book's than most landlord's would abide by it . Why pick on the poor ? RE-INSTATE RENT CONTROL! Savage or no Savage !

There isn't any real reason for........

Rent increases other than corporate greed. If it's true - that nearly 60% of Nova Scotians work for minimum wage - then how can you expect someone in that position to be able to afford $1000.00 a month for rent??!! Rents have soared across the board, since the removal of rent controls. It used to be that you needed to justify a rent increase but now landlords just put it up to increase their profits. Then you have the companies that come in, buy up property after property and, after doing ONLY cosmetic work on a building, they put the rent up 30-50%. I've seen this time and again. If the present government doesn't see a problem with that then their heads are in the sand and their hands are covering their ears! Wake up Dexter! You were supposed to look after the little people! Stop giving away our taxes to corporations and put it where it'll do some real good!

Dawn Sloane represents an up

Dawn Sloane represents an up and coming area that is being rebuilt and refurbished, so yes, rents will rise. The same is happening to homeowners who pay property taxes. There is only so much room on the peninsula.

Greed

The building in which I live would be a good example of the rent going up out of greed. Rent is up 50% over the last handful of years while the maintenance is down, there is no longer an onsite super, they now charge for parking, and the building was converted to gas / solar heating which should be saving a boatload of money. Citywide rent increases started after Killam started buying up all the lower end buildings. When there were a huge number of owners it was OK to have a free market but with the bulk of the largest buildings in very few hands some serious market regulation is now needed.

@OHWELL....didn't jennifer

@OHWELL....didn't jennifer stewart used to report news for ATV? Just goes to show that the landlords have Darrell Dexter in there pockets as well...the people can't win, until the next election.

Upper Caste

You are only just starting to see rent increases that are eyebrow raising. Before long, the increases will become shocking as the ship contract jobs start to get filled. Governments don't really care that much as long as the rich get richer (their main supporters) and lets face it, all the rank and file, the unwashed, the lower caste is expected to do is pay up and shut up.

This provincial government...

...is not my idea of a New Democratic government.

Open-pen aquaculture. Expropriation of land for a foreign mining company. Ever rising power rates. No interest in rent control.

Aha! It's a conspiracy to increase votes for the Green Party.

Darrell Dexter Didn't Learn From Hamm And Savage's Mistakes

Because Darrell Dexter fails to keep three of his key promises, making life affordable for Nova Scotians, improving the Education System, and improving the Health Care system, it seems to me that he didn't learn from John Savage's and John Hamm's mistakes which cost them their majority governments.

In the case of John Savage, his biggest mistakes include discrimination against senior citizens and disabled persons as most of his heartless cuts targeted these individuals. For example, from 1994 - 1997, disabled Family Benefits recipients had their entitlements reduced if parental income exceeded $34,000, meaning that John Savage thinks that disabled adults have no rights compared to able-bodied counterparts. John Savage paid the political price for it as the courts ruled that these cuts were discriminatory and ordered the Department of Community Services to pay full entitlements to disabled Family Benefits recipients.

The result of John Savage's cuts targeting disadvantaged Nova Scotians was the near defeat of the Liberal Party during the 1998 general elections as their strong majority government in 1993 was reduced to a mere minority government five years later.

As for John Hamm, he made some careless political blunders when he was in power as well. His blunders including failure to address the escalating automobile insurance rates and even trying to bring the Ontario style "no fault" insurance system to this province, and failure to deliver on the 10% tax cut as he promised.

His successor, Rodney MacDonald, made things worse with the Sunday Shopping battles against Sobey's and Loblaws, and his abuse of government regulations cost him in the end, and the MacDonald Government was forced to allow Sunday Shopping in Nova Scotia.

The result of their political incompetence was their political stature reduced from a majority government in 1999 to two straight minority governments in 2003 and 2006 respectfully.

Darrell Dexter has now made the same mistake as John Savage, Russell MacLellan, John Hamm, and Rodney MacDonald with his string of careless mistakes.

In the case of Darrell Dexter, his careless mistakes include increasing sales taxes, allowing electrical and water rates to increase while he was supposed to do the opposite, cuts to Health and Education budgets which could be Nova Scotia uncompetitive compared to New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador, cuts to the Yarmouth Ferry, regulatory abuse against Party Bus, and now, Rent Control.

As a result of Premier Dexter constantly renegging on his promises, he has proven not to learn from John Savage's and John Hamm's mistakes, meaning that political history will repeat itself in Nova Scotia as majority governments are reduced to a minority government.

Furthermore, if Premier Dexter is unlucky, failure to impose Rent Control will be his Waterloo.

Power, property taxes, oil

Power, property taxes, oil prices are being increased every year, water went up 40% recently, cost of maintenance, services grown constantly... Many landlords hardy make any profit after all the expenses and bad debts. They have to increase their rents accordingly, not to pocket more money but to not pay for the expenses out of their own pockets. If you want to regulate rent increases, then freeze oil, power, property taxes as well.

Landlords pay property tax too

Election year! Yay! Sloanisms will roll across the airwaves. Too bad none of the voters in her district will remember that the reason their rents are up is the policies and festivals Coun Sloane endorsed throughout her term.

goooooooood bye darrel

dont let the door hit you in the butt when nova scotia shows you the door next election.

millions to failing businesses
hundreds of millions to the irving family
cancelling the yarmouth ferry........wait,...that was a good idea

but one good thing out of so many screw ups isnt going to save the day.

then we have the annual rape of rate payers by nsp.

you are already a has been.

discusting

it is very discus ting that our so called government is suppose to be out there to protect our citizens ... i am a single mom on social services . and the rent increases is ridiculous .. the rents keep going up but our monthly income doesn't ... i have a child who is disabled and my rent is currently 800 a month and i receive $824 a month and i pay for all utilities as well .. so in the real case here for people like myself .. if rents keep going up then our monthly allowance should as well in order for us to be able to live within our means ... when you talk to social services or disability they tell you nothing we can do you will have to figure it out somehow .. this is ridiculous .. we are still human and deserve to be treated as such .. i have a medical issue that refrains me from working and even when i did i had to work two jobs just to make rent and babysitters .. but they want to force us to work ., they need to rent control for people to be able to live normal healthy lives ... they are just forcing some people i know that receive there monies from the government to force them into shelters and such with there children because they cant afford to pay rents and feed there children on what the government sees fit to give us ... i would love to see some of our government officials live off what we have to every month ... shame shame shame on our government ... bring back rent control .. they would rather throw our money away to stupid concerts and events that our city cant cover but they make the weak pay through the nose ... there is many days i have seen myself and many others suffer at the hands of our government ..
